Aliens Dead Orbit: All the Aliens books sell about the same but fans of Island or the recent Godzilla Half Century War might pick this up for Stokoe’s art.  At least one of the Gallery thinks Stokoe will hurt sales but the rest are pretty excited about this.  Aliens plus a few. Shaolin Cowboy: Geoff Darrow has a fan following but despite the critical acclaim this series gets little traction with the majority of fans.  Get some. 10 copies unlocks (hate the whole unlock thing) the Frank Miller cover but Darrow fans will likely be picking this up and the Miller cover won’t be the favorite. Batman Wildcat: Was this the best thing in DC’s archives to bring to publication?  No one cares about Wildcat.  Completely irrelevant and skippable. Batwoman: Coming in all over the place from store to store but it seems to be finding about half the Detective Comics audience. Flash 21: The Lenticular cover order is long behind us but  some completists will want these.  Get some but the lenticular is where the major sales are. Free Country A Children’s Crusade TP: Reprints plus new material to wrap up the series.  Gaiman’s fans seem to be fewer these days but look at the demand for Sandman Overture and go from there while remembering that this is a 19.99 new story. Green Arrow: New Storyline. Super Sons: Pretty significant drop from 1 to 2 but still solid.  Returnable so holding at what sold on #2. Ad After Death: Pretty late though some fans have been waiting.  Question is, how many will be buying with this long a...

Art of Splatoon: I’ve found that most gamers want to play the game and don’t have a lot of interest in memorabilia or secondary products outside maybe a keychain or window decal.  So a 39.99 hardcover art book?  Pass. American Gods: #1 did quite well and 90% of #1 gets full returnability.  I don’t think we’ll hit that 90% mark in sales as we haven’t hit 90% of 1’s order yet but this may have a longer tail than other monthly books. So ordering 90%. Once & Future Queen: Did remarkably abysmal so down to subs only on #2, which is the same as ordering zero in most stores. Batman: The buzz around this is pretty great. Some fans will want to save the buck and get a non-lenticular cover.  Get some of each for those completists. Blue Beetle TP Vol 1: Sometimes it’s okay to say no. This is one of those times. Last Days of the Justice Society TP: For fans of the JSA this is a must read.  The downside?  There aren’t a lot of JSA fans still looking for this who haven’t read it.  Get one. MLP Legends of Magic: Should be no surprise that this will sell pretty close to the rest of the MLP books.  Plus 25% for the #1. Rat Queens: #1 did okay.  Thinking that most fans who bought #1 were doing so based on the previous series and not the usual Image speculators so #2 should do at least 75% of #1 if not slightly more. Rose: Fantasy fare from Image so it will sell some. Looking at a mid-range...

When sales are good and comic confidence is high there’s a lot of perks for both publishers, ancillary item manufacturers, and of course retailers.  Unfortunately, we’re in a slump as an industry right now. I’m seeing a lot of drops on titles that customers used to buy because they’ve been buying them for a long time.  A lot of indies have taken a hit over the last month; indie new book sell-through is disappointing.  When sales are good, stores can afford to buy patches at 40% discount that might take a few months to sell; right now, I’m more in favor of keeping my cash a bit closer to home and putting it into more immediate sales items.  So watch your secondary purchases.  Watch your trade purchases.  Are your customers buying only their weekly subscription or is there a second market beyond the new comics?  Take a close look. Order accordingly. Adventures of Super-Hero Girl: Looks fun but at 16.99 not a kid-friendly impulse purchase.  Yes, it won an Eisner, but kids have no idea who Will Eisner (Happy 100th Birthday, Mr. Eisner) is or why they should care. Maybe one.  Maybe not. Batman Animated GCPD Figure Set: At $175 these figures are entering the Sideshow Statues category of pricing themselves out of the market. Special order only. DC Universe by Mike Mignola: Mixed message on this one from the Gallery.  The Mignola fans like it, the not-so-fans don’t get it.  It’s a random collection of disjointed stories that combined wouldn’t cost as much to buy the originals as it would to buy this. Not a great statement for...

Pre(r)amble: After doing the nine-hour live-streaming Coast to Coast Comic Con at Emerald City this weekend and being stuck in a middle seat for the entire Seattle to Orlando flight after about 12 hours of sleep over the last 3 days, you’re getting a more distilled version than normal.  Thanks to everyone who participated! Adam Strange Future Quest: Cross pull for Future Quest. Not much to do with the Adam Strange part of this. Batgirl Annual: No doubt pull for Batgirl but be a bit daring and pull for Supergirl as well.  Love the cover. Booster Gold Flintstones: The obvious cross-pull is Flintstones. I’m dubious if Flintstones fans want their Flintstones diluted with Booster Gold but Booster Gold fans will probably welcome any appearance.  Thinking cross-pull for Flintstones and the stands will populate themselves from there. Green Lantern Space Ghost: Another Future Quest cross-pull.  I don’t think GL fans will jump on this if they’re not already buying FQ. Suicide Squad Banana Splits: Disclaimer: I may be biased as I was a card-carrying member of the Banana Splits when I was a kid. That said, I still don’t think this is going to do a reasonable fraction of Suicide Squad at 4.99.  Suggest Future Quest numbers as a guess but this one is probably the toughest to order. Titans Annual: JLA cross-over.  These mash-ups usually do okay but still thinking Titans over JLA numbers plus maybe 10%. Orphan Black Deviations: Orphan Black, despite the TV popularity, hasn’t seen that translate into sales in our stores. This might gain some interest but likely not more than previous issues at very...
