Hellboy: Will sell the same as pretty much every Hellboy.   Mata Hari: Likely would have found an audience another time and the Image speculators aren’t buying Dark Horse #1s. Returnable at 10 copies so if you have a shot as moving half that, it’s worth an order. Otherwise, unlikely to move a lot of copies.   Vinegar Teeth: No discernable sales pattern as some stores sold out of 10 copies while other still have the same 2 they started with. Seems to be an advocate thing. If you’re not an advocate, it’s likely not selling.   Aquaman the Legend of Aquaman TP: Lot of books that can be bought for half the price of the trade. Not a great collection.   Batman: Part one. Poison Ivy. Tom King can do no wrong. Order up.   Batman Sins of the Father: Not a lot of excitement from the Gallery as this is a digital-first book and based on a video game. So who will buy it?  Looking at Batman Creature of the Night for #1 but expect a drop-off after #1.   Batman Wonder Woman: Nice art by Liam Sharp and Batman is hot. Looking through the preview, there’s a lot of Not-Batman so WW is going to have to carry this through the first issue and get Batfans to come back. Thinking about 200% WW, which puts it about 65% of Batman. Likely see a drop after #1.   Cave Carson Swamp Thing: This series is almost impossible to get right so looking at Cave Carson numbers with a nod to Swamp Thing fans and a remembrance that...

Legend of Zelda Encyclopedia HC: If you’ve sold any of the other Zelda HCs then this should move just as well. Less than $2 cheaper on Amazon so this is a buy-it-here thing. Action Variant: Superman with the flag always sells a few extra copies. Mister Miracle Director’s Cut: Would normally sell like any other lackluster Director’s Cut except that 1) this has needed multiple printings though admittedly to readers and 2) it contains a new 8-page origin story by Tom King.  Is that worth 5.99? Steep price but MM fans seems to not be able to get enough. Look at your subs for MM and order about 50%. Shade the Changing Girl Wonder Woman Special: At least we could cross-pull the Batman special for some Batfans but this… I dunno. Doesn’t look like WW and even if it were, it’s not a version WW fans would want – vacuuming and delivering milk, not so much.  Looking at Shade numbers, which are horrifically low, plus 50%. Terrifics: Jeff Lemier and Ivan Reis should have enough respect among fans to garner a look. Look at Damage and add a few from there. Death of Love: Shipping for Valentine’s Day, a man chopping through Cupid’s elves with a chainsaw. It will appeal to the folks who hate Valentine’s Day though I can’t imagine it being more than a one-issue and the joke is over sort of thing. Lower end of Image #1s. Ice Cream Man: Like many hot Image titles, this one seems to be driven by the $15 price tag on eBay. That means second prints won’t be wanted. Invincible:...

Diamond announced market shares and DC was the top publisher for December. Nice to see their efforts pay off. However, the more interesting thing is the horrific downturn in sales from this year to the previous. Lot of significant dips, which explains why we see so many established stores falling.  Look at your numbers. Our sales in 2017 were down to 2014 levels BUT, we were quite profitable in 2014. We won’t be profitable in 2018 if we do sales of 2014 and order like it’s 2015. Look carefully. If you carry everything your customers want then you carry everything.   Incognegro Renaissance: Meh. Not a lot of interest. We sold a few copies of the trade from a year(?) ago but didn’t get any real traction.   Batman: I’m pretty sure no one has to advise anyone on how to order Batman… then why is everyone selling out? Seems Tom King can do no wrong and every issue gains more readers. Order up as this will sell for a long time.   Batman & the Signal:#1 did very well and with Batmania in full swing, no reason it shouldn’t continue to do well.   Batman By Neal Admas TP: This is Adams in his prime and some of the best comics DC was doing at the time. Worth having in stock.   Dark Knight Rising Wild Hunt: Metal part 7. Order like it.   Mister Miracle Umpteenth Printings: This is a great book because people are actually reading it and it’s not speculator driven. Keep it in stock.   Mother Panic Batman Special: Hooboo. No matter how we...

Fight Club 2: A year late and a lot of the heat is long gone. Subs and maybe one if you’re feeling like living dangerously.   Hungry Ghosts: I’m not feeling it but the Gallery thinks this could be cool and find an audience. At ten copies, you get to find out on DH’s dime who is right.   Batman & Harley HC: Collected online comics. Not sure it needed to be a HC but some Harley fans will enjoy this and not mind the extra expense of the format. Subs and a copy or two.   Batman B&W Statue by Cloonan: Lots of thumbs up from the Gallery. Looks pretty cool though I can’t help wondering what the damage ratio will be on this one.   Dark Days Road to Metal HC: Quite the hodgepodge of issues cobbled together for this in an apparent attempt to jack up the price. Could have done great with this at 19.99 but the 29.99 will keep it on the shelf.   DC Comics Bombshell Wonder Woman: Jumped to $200? We could sell a lot of these at the former $125 but not seeing the $75 difference that makes it deluxe unless we’re counting a cannon as ther “deluxe” bit. We’ll still sell a few.   DC Essentials Action Figures: These tend to sell forever but the lower price at 26.00 isn’t that much lower to make anyone notice. Batman is ‘eh’ but Batman tends to always sell. Flash sells forever as well. Deathstroke is the tough sell here.   DC Gallery Two Face Coin: Cool item and though there’s some raised...

Farewell to 2017 and welcome to 2018. If you haven’t taken the time to analyze where your money is being spent vs where it’s being made, do that asap. The beginning of the year is a good time to make some changes. To whoever leaked the DC retailer page info to Rich Johnston, that was a scummy thing to do. I think I know who likely did it and that person isn’t on this page anyways but copying anything from this or any of the retailer-only sites will get you banned from this site.  The only exception is copying my FOC notes for your staff or managers though please leave it with retail professionals and do not disseminate to publisher. Vinegar Teeth: Nothing much to see here as it’s a mini and though it may become many mini-series’ along the way, it will have a hard time finding any traction. It’s returnable but do you want to sink your cash into this for 8 weeks?  Which brings us to my pet project this year, which is taking a new look at how new comic are ordered. I’m seeing fewer and fewer sales off the stands on the bottom 300 titles we carry and getting stuck with one copy of 300 titles across my stores costs me around $4200 a month / $50,000 a year. That’s to display books that simply aren’t selling off the stands. The Direct Market was 45 years old in 2017 and none of us signed off on it nor did anyone publishing comics today. In short, it’s an outmoded system that needs a complete overhaul....
